Example of Flat Locked Copper Job
What We Do
This homeowner built a flat roof inbetween two roof pitches to avoid a bottle neck of debris. He wanted to install a flat locked copper roof for longevity and permanent protection. Rubber membrane roofs last between 15-20 years where as copper can last upwards of 90 years.
A flat locked copper roof consist of roofing panels 24” x 18” with hems on all sides. These pans are pre-tinned, dipped into a pre-tinning trough full of hot solder, and bent on a sheet metal brake.
Each pan is installed one at a time. They are first locked together using two hems of the pans and cleated on the opposite sides. We then fluxed the seams using acid and then sweated together the pans together on the joints using 60/40 lead/tin solder.
This is a very time consuming process because the sweating solder moves at a snails pace. From start to finish this project took around 2 weeks.
