Job Example of Cricket Flashing Repair
What We Do
These two chimneys were leaking because water was ponding behind the chimney faster than it could travel down the roof. This caused the water to rise and spill over the back chimney apron, also referred to as the back gutter. In both of these chimneys cases they did not meet code which requires that a chimney with a width of 30” or more must have a chimney cricket.
Chimney crickets, are slopes installed at the back of a chimney to shed water before it has a chance to build up. They typically come in two forms, a two sided or one sided. If the back of a chimney is going to take on a lot of water we install a two sided chimney cricket. If the chimney is on the rake, or side, of a roof we will install a one sided chimney cricket.
On this project we installed a wooden structure underneath the two sided cricket which was coated with ice and water shield to provide protection to the job in case it rained on us while we were working. Then we custom fabricated the two sides of the cricket to fit and hand seamed the standing seam together where they meet. The seam is double folded so that ice does not creep into the seams in the case of snow. Lastly we install the counterflashing in place to prevent water from running behind the flashing.
The one sided cricket was installed similarly however no underying structure is needed to support it since its smaller in stature due to less water flow. Scroll to the right to see what the one sided copper cricket looks like.
