Job Example of TPO lining Installation in a Box Gutter
What We Do
Box Gutters, or built-in gutters, can hold a large amount of water runoff and snow load. Unfortunately, they are often expensive to replace. One cost effective solution is to install TPO, a rubber roof membrane, in the gutters to prevent leaks in the box gutter.
It is never a good idea to throw a new membrane onto the old lining because they have different expansion and contraction rates, there may be moisture build up underneath the old lining, and the decking is probably rotted. Therefore, the first thing we do is remove the old lining.
On this job we took off the lining and added rafter supports because the old supports had rotted through. Then we replaced the decking boards to ensure a sound structure. Once this is complete we can begin the TPO process.
First we adhere ice and water shield in the the box gutter with ice and water shield as a temporary precaution. Then we screw high density iso insulation boards down on the decking. This gives the gutters a cushion from debris or falling slates so the rubber does not tear.
We then adhere the TPO membrane onto the insulation using glue and heat weld the seams together. Once the TPO is secure, we install drip edge along the perimeter of the box gutter to secure edges and then use termination bar at the top of the TPO. The termination bar both secures the TPO down and acts as a cant strip for the slate when putting them back into place.
Lastly we add the slate to overhang the TPO and the box gutter is complete. This process usually takes us 5-8 days to complete. Please note, the temperature needs to be over 32 degrees for the glue to adhere. It is not advisable to install these gutters if there is rain in the forecast.
