Difference Between Nails
Why Nail Choice Matters for Your Roof
When it comes to repairing or installing a slate roof, the type of nails you use can make a big difference in the quality and longevity of the roof. There are three main types of nails commonly used for slate roofing: electro galvanized nails, hot dipped galvanized nails, and copper nails. Each type has its own unique characteristics and is best suited for certain applications.
Electro galvanized nails are made of steel and coated with a thin layer of zinc using an electroplating process. They are the least expensive and least durable of the three types of nails. Electro galvanized nails are prone to rusting and may not hold up as well in extreme weather conditions. They are best suited for short-term or temporary repairs.
Hot dipped galvanized nails are made of steel and coated with a thicker layer of zinc using a hot dip galvanizing process. They are more durable and resistant to rust than electro galvanized nails, but they are still prone to corrosion over time. Hot dipped galvanized nails are a good choice for moderate-term repairs or for use in areas with moderate weather conditions.
Copper nails are made of pure copper and are the most expensive and most durable of the three types of nails. Copper nails are resistant to corrosion and can last for decades without rusting. They are the best choice for long-term repairs or for use in areas with extreme weather conditions.
